nvidia proprietary drivers (and LTS kernels)

Postby pentajazz » 21 Nov 2015, 20:32

I know this is tough, but I will ask.. has someone tried to install (on sb or a permanent save-file) nvidia proprietary drivers?

For example, I would need 340 branch,
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr ... 0xx-utils/
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverRe ... 5165/en-us
(I am using it successfully on manjaro linux from its special kernel/driver install tools).
I had also success on an old fatdog64 with the corresponding sfs package.
I guess i have to recompile some kernel parts if possible here, but again any kernel upgrade in future versions would conflict. I am facing an old unsolved nouveau bug, not allowing to use a second monitor on every distro.

I guess a corresponding sb file could do it, but it could be hard to make it (and of course hard to keep it updated). I would be ok with an LTS kernel and this driver, no need to upgrade often for me.

PS:I would like to see an LTS alphaos version

I 've never tried of course

But if it works with fatdog it should play nice with AUFS

About building a LTS alphaOS that should be feasible at least as far
as recompiling kernel but I don't know what you mean in regard to
backporting updates and so, That would be your own job then I guess.

Like I build it and you maintain it.

I guess i have to recompile some kernel parts if possible here

which parts with what kernel config?

Do you foresee any problems that alphaOS uses AUFS patched kernel?
I know for instance AUFS and grsecurity are not easily merged.

Ok, LTS is just a thought, nothing more. No need for a 2nd version of course. I thought there could be a way, to select 2 kernels from the very first boot screen, never mind.

Kernel: It is a kernel module that has to be compiled for every kernel used (if compatible by nvidia), there is no need to compile other parts (sorry for the misleading phrase), nvidia module and kernel have to be the same version. But if someone upgrades kernel, only this module has to to be recompiled using the kernel sources.

I thought it could be done in aufs mode and saved permanently, thanks for pointing this. I might give it a try in the future

Not sure I like that idea, trying to keep size down

I skimmed the link and it looks doable.
I cannot test it meself, I mean the install part.

I'm a bit to tired today but will see if I can compile it for you if you wanna help test it
Should work

Tried it

https://www.dropbox.com/s/57baedey60sz1 ... g.tar?dl=1

notes:

0. Could make a bundle out of that pkg by running arch2sb in the same directory as it

1. It is built with nvidia-340xx-utils
this pkg is listed as depends so I think you have to install it

2. It is built with mesa-libgl and that might be wrong
I think however when you try it you have to uninstall that
and install nvidia-340xx-libgl ??

3. In the file is included a blacklist of noveau in
/usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf

I don't think that is honored in alphaos, blacklist in another way

4. check postinstall for things that you might have to do

Code: Select all

  post_install() {
    EXTRAMODULES='extramodules-4.1.6-ALPHAOS'
    depmod $(cat /usr/lib/modules/${EXTRAMODULES}/version)
    echo 'In order to use nvidia module, reboot the system.'
}

i have recentlly tried it without success in 17.3. I wish there could be an sd file for this if possible. I had blackisted nouveau but it seems there is an early booting stop without an obvious warning message.

I don't exactly remember but I think I could build it but not test it
so it is a bit hard for me to do it.

I would accept .sb file if you build and test one

I see, but as i do not often go deep into kernel stuff, if you could provide some basic instructions with commands, on how to build those files, it will be much faster for me. Otherwise i will not probably try it again. Then this could be a guide for other versions of the driver. thanks for your support

Okay I may look into it but right now I'm swamped in my daytime job.
