Next version of alphaos

Postby Scooby » 22 Jan 2015, 21:53

I know how I like alphaos but I want to ask the faithful few
what they like and maybe want for the future?

1. I'm thinking of letting go of connman in favour of peasywifi
Anyone seeing a huge problem in this?

2. Thinking of switching packer for a fork named apacman that is
if it can be adapted to makesb

3. I thinking of shipping alphaos with icecat as default browser
Possibly as a standalone bundle so it can easily be switched out
Maybe an option to also run it sandboxed in lxc container using firejail
BTW Any gtk3 only stable browsers????

For a longer perspective I am interested in making a hardened version
of alphaos.

I would like some input on what you like

1. I don't know peasywifi but from what I've heard connman is the best out there. Too bad connman-gtk-ui is so awful :(
2. I don't know...packer has been in the heart of alphaos for a long time. :S What exactly is the reason to change to apacman?
3. Icecat as a bundle would be very welcome. Too bad noone likes palemoon. And no, I haven't seen any stable GTK3 browsers :(

Did you talk with simargl about this?
Cheers

Okay so 1 vote for keeping connman, need at least one more not to switch.
I have a bad experience with connman. unstable and slow speed.
But no worries for me I can adjust alphaos to my own needs

Any alternatives for connman-ui

0.5 better error handling( haven't tried but developer claim it)
1. actively devloped while packer is not.
2. support ABS

It's a fork of packer so no need to learn something new.

your reasons not to change is?.....

I vote to change to peasy wifi. Connkan crashes alot and it's hard to connect to secure connections. Firefox-gtk3-bin is available in the Aur but I dont like the direction Mozilla has taken. I prefer Chromium or Opera

#> packer -Si firefox-gtk3-bin
Repository : aur
Name : firefox-gtk3-bin
Version : 37.0a1.20141216145037-1
Depends On : gtk2 libxt dbus-glib gtk3 alsa-lib dbus-glib nss>=3.14.1 hunspell

Any browser that will be shipped with alphaos will be in a separate bundle so it is easy to switch to
your favorite

Not quite. I just said that I've been told by many people that connman is the best network manager out there but I honestly can't tell if it's true or not. And I didn't say that I was opposed to change ;)

I see. It has worked ok on most of my PC's...
Sure it's not an issue between connman and the drivers?

Not that I know of.

Cool :)

None. I just said that we were using packer since long time. But if apacman is a better choice I won't stand in your way :)

That's bad. I would prefer if he could stay a little longer. We will have many questions that only him can answer.

That sucks why make a gtk3 version that still depends on gtk2

Hmm... I will prefer connman to others as I haven't had any need to change. The only downside is perhaps its less tweaking options. But then I can easily tweak alphaos to my needs so not a big deal if the majority opt for a replacement.
Too bad sim has to leave so hastily :(
I hope he will be around some day ;)
Cheers.

I mark you down as "undecided" then

Dunnow what the issue was but peasywifi worked out of the box with no tweaking
even old pwireless2 did that

That remains to be seen, I'd like to try it.
The working packer-makesb combination could always be supplied in a bundle
for those still wanting that after shift.
