Douane Personal Linux Firewall

Postby efgee » 10 Dec 2014, 04:24

Hi,
found Douane, a personal firewall:
http://douaneapp.com/
and thought it might be a good addition to alphaOS.

The code (GTK3):
https://github.com/Douane/Douane/wiki/Compilation
The Wiki:
https://github.com/Douane/Douane/wiki/Dependencies
The arch Linux package:
https://github.com/Douane/Douane/wiki/Archlinux-Packaging

The difference to other Linux firewalls is that it has the possibility to protect the user's privacy by allowing the user to control which applications can connect to the internet.

What do you guys/gals think?

Did you install it?

What are your judgement after running it sometime?

Does it feel like a windows-firewall?

It comes with a kernelmodule right?

All in all how many MB of data is it?

No I did not install it yet, it's on my to-do list.
Reading the instructions it shouldn't be to difficult to do.
Hope to have time this coming weekend.
Will certainly keep you informed.

Had time to look into this.
After installing all the dependencies I was able to compile everything.
(at least it seems that way)

However I was unable to start the Douane service.
Douane was developed under Ubuntu without systemd (they used to use upstart).
So I tried:

Code: Select all

systemctl enable douane

but Douane was not found.
Therefore I could not start it with:

Code: Select all

systemctl start douane

The next step is to look into where the douane service file needs to reside so systemd can find it.

The fact that I'm new to systemd is not helping.
More time is needed... ;)

Did you load the kernel module?

Also the fact that alphaos is not using systemd could possibly be not helping

allthough systemd is included in alphaos we use sysvinit

Code: Select all

 > pacman -Ss systemd
core/libsystemd 216-3 [installed]
    systemd client libraries
core/systemd 216-3 [installed]
    system and service manager

> systemctl is-system-running
Failed to get D-Bus connection: Unknown error -1

I think we have it for udev support

> ps -ef | grep systemd
2175 ? 00:00:01 systemd-udevd

Installed dkms, if this is what you are talking about...

Did not know that...

My thought was:
Arch = systemd
Arch -> AlphaOS
therefore:
AlphaOS = systemd

Bummer.

from here written on the 28th of september

Without the configurator, you can still use it with sudo /etc/ini.d/douane start.
Then when an unknown activity will be detected, you should see the dialog window.

from the same source

Ha ... you're using systemd ... Ubuntu is using upstart as far as I remember.
Also I remember someone telling me that systemd is not supported.

I checked github both init.d and system.d dirs for daemon now

Had to install "init-functions" from aur otherwise douane would give an error message.
But for this I had to change the PKGBUILD file because the init-functions file from the ubuntu archive in PKGBUILD is not available anymore.
I used:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/m ... 0.3.tar.gz
instead with his md5sum:
44795a99b22bbd0db314881bf431b496

Now I was able to create a software bundle.

The error message is gone.
However it still doesn't run.

Baby steps I guess...
